Phase 1- To determine the effect of using “Portland Limestone Cement, CEM II/A-L 32.5 N and CEM II/A-L 42.5 N” on the mechanical performance of the respective concrete utilized under common construction conditions in Egypt. The objective of the current study is to examine the suitability of Portland Limestone Cement CEM II/A-L for use in structural concrete applications based on mechanical as well as durability perfor mance. The study plan included three phases: A lower w/c ratio of 0.4 was used in the investigation series of the concrete made with “Portland Limestone Cement CEM II/A-L 42.5 N” in order to simulate the industrial ready-mixed concrete as a ‘better case’ application.

Batches using w/c ~ to 0.6 were prepared for the concrete made of cement with “Portland Limestone Cement CEM II/A-L 32.5 N”. Phase 3- To evaluate the practice of using excessive water/cement ratios, commonly applied in several unsupervised construction sites in the country, which represents a major concern in the study. For this reason, the effect of chloride and sulfate solutions on the “strength and length change” behavior of concrete specimens made with CEM II/A-L 32.5 N was compared with the performance of concrete specimens made with the reference cement CEM I 42.5 N. Phase 2- To determine the effect of “Portland Limestone Cement CEM II/A-L 32.5 N” on the durability performance of the corresponding concrete for three cement contents (300, 350 and 400 kg cement/m3 concrete) at ambient temperature. Portland Limestone Cement CEM II/A-L 32.5 N was used to represent the worst case for the application of this type of cement in structural concrete. For this purpose, the compressive strength of concrete specimens produced using “Portland Limestone Cement CEM II/A-L 32.5 N and 42.5 N” were compared with the performance of concrete specimens produced using CEM I 42.5 N as reference for three different cement contents (300, 350 and 400 kg cement/m3 concrete) at ambient temperature (20~25oC).
